Flu or Strep? How Molecular Testing Helps Us Get the Right Answer for Your Child
Your child wakes up with a fever, sore throat, headache, and no energy. Is it the flu? Strep throat? Another virus?
For parents, many childhood illnesses can look remarkably similar, especially during the first few days. 🧪 What Is Molecular Testing?
Molecular testing is a highly sensitive diagnostic method that detects genetic material from the virus or bacteria being tested.
You may already be familiar with traditional rapid tests. They can provide useful information quickly, but depending on the type of test and infection, a negative rapid result doesn’t always tell the entire story.
Molecular testing can offer greater sensitivity and may help identify an infection that some traditional rapid tests could miss. For our providers, better diagnostic information can mean greater confidence when deciding what treatment your child needs, or doesn’t need.
🤧 Molecular Flu Testing for Children
Influenza can come on quickly.
Children may experience:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Muscle or body aches
- Significant tiredness
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Vomiting or diarrhea, which can occur more commonly in children than adults
Unfortunately, many respiratory illnesses can cause similar symptoms.
When clinically indicated, molecular flu testing can help determine whether influenza is responsible for your child’s illness. Knowing whether your child has influenza can help your provider make decisions about treatment, including whether antiviral medication may be appropriate.
It also gives families valuable information about what to expect at home, symptoms that require reevaluation, and precautions that may help prevent the illness from spreading to others.
😷 Does My Child Have Strep Throat?
A sore throat doesn’t automatically mean strep. In fact, many sore throats in children are caused by viruses, and viral infections do not improve with antibiotics.
Strep throat is different. It is caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria and can require antibiotic treatment when confirmed.
Possible symptoms of strep throat include:
- Sudden sore throat
- Pain with swallowing
- Fever
- Red or swollen tonsils
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Headache
- Abdominal discomfort, nausea, or vomiting in some children
Because symptoms can overlap with viral illnesses, your child’s provider will evaluate the complete clinical picture and determine whether strep testing is appropriate. When indicated, molecular strep testing provides a highly sensitive method of detecting Group A Strep.
💯 Why More Accurate Testing Matters
Sometimes the most important result of testing isn’t finding out which medication your child needs. It’s finding out which medication your child doesn’t need.
Antibiotics are important medications that treat bacterial infections such as strep throat. However, antibiotics don’t treat influenza, colds, or other viral infections.
Appropriate diagnostic testing helps our providers avoid unnecessary antibiotic use while making sure children with bacterial infections receive appropriate treatment.
This approach supports antibiotic stewardship — using antibiotics only when they are truly needed. That helps protect your child from unnecessary medication and potential side effects while also helping reduce antibiotic resistance in our communities.

Depending on your child’s symptoms and the testing performed, a negative initial test may not always end the evaluation.
When appropriate under our clinical testing protocols, additional molecular testing may be used to help provide greater diagnostic confidence. This is especially valuable when your child’s symptoms and examination continue to raise concern for a specific infection despite an initial negative result.
