Homework seems to be one of the things parents with kids of every age seem to struggle with on a daily basis. Whether it is a lack of motivation or household distractions, setting a daily routing and motivating your child can drastically improve how he or she views homework. Below are some tips and tricks to help motivate your child to complete their homework without putting up a fight.
Create a space in the home that is specifically for doing homework. Make sure that this area is free of distractions like the TV, phone, radio, and any other devices that may divert your child’s attention. Also, make sure that any siblings are aware that when someone is working in the area they should be left alone. Stock the station with the things your child might need for completing their homework such as pencils, pens, crayons and erasers.
Establishing a routine for homework is very important. If you can have your kids sit down and complete their homework as soon as they walk through the door. This will allow more time after dinner for everyone to relax as a family.
While some kiddos are very self-motivated to complete all of their schoolwork, others will need an incentive to motivate them. Once your child reaches their goal, you could reward them with dinner at their favorite restaurant, a new book, or even an ice cream cone from their favorite place. A great way to motivate kids is by creating a reward chart with stickers. This will visually motivate them to see just how much closer they are to reaching their reward.
Encouraging your child and letting them know how proud you are of them will also motivate them. Kids love it when their parents are proud of them and this positive encouragement will keep motivating them to do well in the future. Let them know that you are there for them if they find themselves stuck on a problem. Stay positive while helping them, if you become frustrated they will as well.
