Musings From Mom
Here at Urgent Care for Kids, moms are so important to us! This month, in honor of Mother’s Day, we will be honoring moms through Mommy May on our blog and social media outlets. We asked a few of our staff members to tell us what they’ve learned from their own mothers!
April Gillam, COO
When I was born, my mother was finishing her residency and starting to work family urgent care with Baylor in Richardson, Texas. Some of my earliest memories are of watching Friday night television specials while eating Chinese food and pizza in the break room of that urgent care facility with her. I always wanted to spend as much time as possible with her while she worked so hard to build her career and family simultaneously. My mother was devoted to her patients, but more importantly she was devoted to her family. After working 14 hour+ days, she would rush to attend my dance performances and competitions to ensure that I felt loved and cherished. As an adult, I now realize and fully appreciate what a feat this was. I would not fiercely pursue my career and my family if it were not for the example my mother set for me. I love her dearly, even if I am not the best at expressing it at times. Happy Mother’s Day Dr. Linda Halbrook. Thank you for making me the woman I am today!
Melissa Bauman, VP of Marketing & Customer Service
My Mom is a fearless little Italian woman with a huge heart for others. When I was little, she taught me all about country living. Whether it was planting okra in the garden, picking berries, riding horses, or climbing trees, she was the first one to lead the way. Despite her best efforts to make me a country girl, I somehow ended up loving the city, and I doubt I’ll ever have pets or a garden, but I cherish the memories made with her that way. First and foremost, she taught me to have grace, to be kind, to have joy in the good and the bad, and to do everything to the best of my ability. I am so thankful for the influence she has on me daily, and for her constant friendship!
Kristen Moss, Houston Marketing Director
My mom has believed in me and supported me from day one. Throughout my life, she has been a constant source of encouragement and also the voice of reason that tells me what I need to hear, not necessarily what I want to hear. She has been a costume-sewing dance mom, a drama-deterring cheer mom, an enthusiastic Aggie mom, and now an advice-giving twenty-something mom, excelling in every single role. My mom has taught me that in order to make a friend you have to be a friend, to choose faith rather than fear, and never to buy cheap shoes. I’m so thankful to have little Lisa as my mom!
Tomi Fanning, Austin Marketing Director
Something my mom has taught me is to find joy in every situation. No matter how bad it may be. There are people out there a lot worse off than most and complain a lot less. Be grateful.
Becca Schanzer, Corporate Administrative Associate
My mother has taught me many lessons in life. She is the one person who is truly right 100%. She taught me to follow my heart and fulfill my dreams. She backs me up 100%. She taught me how to be responsible, kind to others, and many more things. A huge thing she taught me, and I don’t know what I would do without her, is how to save money. The amount I used to spend without responsibilities was crazy, and without her I would be broke in the future!
