Finding the Right Babysitter
With summer in full swing, chances are high that mom will need a break at some point! Whether you’re a first time mom or a seasoned pro, leaving your child in the care of someone new can make even the most relaxed parent just a bit nervous. We’ve got a few tips on choosing the right babysitter to help calm your nerves!
- Choose someone you know, or who comes with recommendation from a trusted source. Whether you choose a relative or a teenager who’s a family friend, it’s important that you are familiar with this person. It also helps if your kids know them as well, so they’re not left with a complete stranger.
- If you do hire someone brand new, have them come meet your kids beforehand. It’s important for kids to meet their babysitter (even briefly) before they’re left alone with them. This will assure them that the new babysitter is a friend and give them a sense of familiarity and comfort once the parents sneak out!
- Make sure they have experience, especially if you have an infant. While your 14-year old neighbor seems responsible, it’s very possible that she’s never changed a diaper before, which could pose a problem. Try to choose someone who has younger siblings or relatives if you can. If you’re set on hiring someone who’s never cared for a young child, teach them the basics while you’re showing them around!
- Interview them. This may seem unnecessary, but babysitting is a job, and both parties need to ensure that it’s a good fit! During this time, ask them about their previous experience, what they would do in an emergency, and explain the ground rules you have for babysitters and whether or not they are willing to follow those. Like a regular job interview, this should give you a good glimpse into whether or not they will be a good fit for you and your kids.
